Punishment is the job of the Lord’s. It is not for us to do. Psalm 10 is a prayer that God rescues the Psalmist from assaults from the arrogant and the evil people that are getting at him.

Verse 1 says “O LORD, why do you stand so far away? Why do you hide when I need you the most?” There have been times when I have felt like this however later on I am reminded of the poem “Footsteps in the Sand”

When it feels God is far away from us He is in fact closest to us. He may indeed be carrying us though a trial.

In todays world (as it was then too) there is a common viewpoint that God is dead. Verse 4 says: “These wicked people are too proud to seek God. They seem to think that God is dead.” 100 years ago a philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche spoke these words – “God is dead.” That is very sad.

We need to share passionately with the hurting and dying world that God is not dead. That God lives!!

Verse 5 “Yet they succeed in everything they do. They do not see your punishment awaiting them. They sneer at all their enemies”.

While some people seem to succeed in everything they do. They sometimes become greedy, money-driven and materialistic. To them what matters most is that they “keep up with the Jones.” It is sad when these same people laugh and tease those less fortunate. Materialistic people usually don’t give God much thought. They feel self-sufficient. They feel protected in the wealth that they have build up and feel that that they are safe from financial disaster however “times of trouble” (verse 1) could refer to this downfall.

I don’t think God is interested in what you do or do not have. I think what interests God is the state of your heart.

verses 17 & 18 Reminds us that we need to be like God and pray, help, care, comfort and advocate for the helpless, the orphans and the oppressed.

Great insights. I also believe in addition to punishment being the Lord’s job, so is judgment and we should leave judgments to him!

I was going to include judgement then decided I was discussing punishment and took it out but you are right 🙂

Hi Jen, Hope you are well? It has been rather hectic over at my place and will be for a while still but hopefully I will be back real soon!!! Take Care

  7. Leticia

I agree. However, I still wouldn’t mind having a larger home with two bathrooms instead of one, hee.

Leticia, I have 3 girls and one bathroom…so I hear you!

Jen, great post…I’m always intrigued at the “dying to self” concept of Christianity. I’ve always thought of it in terms of dying to my selfish desires (materialism, etc)…but yesterday in church my pastor took it further with dying to all we hold up in foolish pride. Everything we’re proud of accomplishing (yes, even things we’ve done for God)…because in the end, we are still sinners saved by grace. Man may see the good we’ve done, but God sees our heart. It’s a sobering thought! So little time here on earth to make it count.

    Thanks for this post.
